Holly Class informationHolly class will be taught by myself, Alex Halsey from Monday through to Thursday with Coleen Truett on Fridays.
Teaching Assistant is Mrs Vicky Richards with Mrs Daphne Blakey working on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
To develop independent learning and enable a smooth transition from Reception to Year 1, the classroom has been carefully set up to include the same areas as in the Reception class. 'Plan, Do and Review' will also continue as an integral part of the school day, whilst Friday afternoons, from 1.30 - 2.15 pm will provide an opportunity to undertake this with Oak and Acorn Classes. We would welcome as many parent helpers as possible to provide a rich variety of activities. Please let us know if you can help, even if it is only one afternoon every so often - every little bit helps!
We will continue to use the outside environment as an important learning tool, so please ensure your child brings a pair of named wellies to be kept in school. These will be kept with your child's belongings under the bench in the cloakroom. Please bring in a peg to keep the wellies together.
PE is on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. A professional coach will be coming in on Wednesday afternoons to teach games skills.
Phonics and handwritingThis will be undertaken daily in ability groups. We will learn a cursive style of writing, where each letter starts with a 'lead in' from the line. This approach makes joined writing much easier later on and helps with seeing whole words, aiding spelling. We will learn to form letters in similar letter shapes:-
c, o, a, d, g, q h, r, n, m i, l, t, u, y, v, w, p, b k, e, f, j, s, x, z,
ReadingReading will be a priority. As well as individual reading, Guided Reading sessions will take place, where each child in a group read the same book. The focus for this will be on comprehension skills. In addition, the children will have a library slot on Monday mornings (starting 19th September) to choose a picture story book for you to share with your child. This will need to be brought back on Mondays in order for another one to be issued.
The children have been asked to place any reading books which need changing in a clearly marked box in the classroom. These will be changed daily. Please leave at home any sounds books or Home Learning books from Acorn Class to avoid heavy book bags!
If you are able to spare an hour to come and undertake reading activities with groups of children, please let me know.
Home learning. Please hear your child read daily, writing in their yellow reading record book to help keep me informed. You may like to undertake a little handwriting practice, should your child show an interest. We will also update the blog regularly and would encourage your child to leave a comment.
Your child will be coming home with either a yellow or green sounds book within the next couple of weeks. Please help them learn the rhymes for the sounds of the week and practice blending the words. As the term progresses other 'tricky words' will be sent home. In addition, your child will soon be given a password for 'Studyladder,' to help develop mathematical skills.
Please look at the school website. Click on 'classes', 'Holly class', 'links' and many websites will appear which will support your child's learning.
I will shortly be sending out the planning for this term.
Should you have something you need to discuss, please feel free to find me in the classroom at 8.30 am or make an appointment for after school.
I look forward to working with you and your child.
